Pongal is a harvest festival dedicated to the Sun. It is a four-day festival which is celebrated from 14 January to 17 January. Thai Pongal is  celebrated in Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and  in Sri Lanka as well as Tamils worldwide.  The day marks the begining of the sun’s six-month-long journey northwards called the Uttaraayanam.  Thai Pongal is  celebrated to thank the Sun God for a successful harvest. Part of the celebration is the boiling of the freshly harvested rice of the season consecrated to the Sun.
