Draupadi Murmu is India’s first ever president hailing from one of the tribal communities. Born on June 20, 1958, she belongs to the Santhal community in Odisha. She is the second woman President of India. She is the first president to be born after the Independence of our Nation. Draupadi Murmu as a young woman started her career in the irrigation and power department in Odisha. She held the position of a junior assistant there.
She began her political career as councillor in Rairangpur Nagar Panchayat in 1997 in Odisha. She was a two-term former MLA from Rairangpur, Odisha. She was awarded the Nilkanth Award for the best MLA of the year in 2007 by the Odisha Legislative assembly. In the year 2000 she became a minister in the Odisha government. Later in 2015 she was appointed as the Governor of Jharkhand.
Murmu was married to Shyam Charan Murmu and they had two sons and a daughter. Her life has been marked with personal tragedies as she lost her husband and two sons. Murmu’s daughter Itishree is married to Ganesh Hembram.
